Getting to Lakeside from Phoenix and Tucson

From Phoenix, Lakeside is approximately 3.5 hours via US-60 East through Globe, then east on AZ-260 through Show Low. It's a straightforward drive — no significant mountain passes, no switchbacks — just open highway that gradually climbs from desert scrub into pine forest. The elevation change is part of the experience: you can actually watch the landscape shift as you gain altitude.

From Tucson, the drive is roughly 3 hours via AZ-77 North through Oracle and Globe, then east on US-60 and AZ-260. From Albuquerque or El Paso, Lakeside is also accessible via I-40 to Show Low.

What to Do Near Our Lakeside Cabins

Rainbow Lake — Located just west of both our cabins, Rainbow Lake is a 60-acre reservoir stocked with rainbow trout by Arizona Game and Fish. It's perfect for fishing, catch-and-release, kayaking, and lakeside picnics. Bring poles and tackle — the lake is productive, especially in the mornings.

Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area — A state park about 5 miles away with a 150-acre lake, campground, boat launch, and swimming area. Ideal for a day trip when your group wants more water activities.

Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest Trails — Hundreds of miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, starting just outside Lakeside. The Rim Lakes Vista Trail and the Mogollon Rim overlooks provide dramatic views above 7,500 feet.

Show Low — About 10 minutes from Lakeside, Show Low is the regional hub for groceries (Safeway, Walmart), restaurants, and supplies. Stock your group's kitchen before settling in at the cabin.

Hawley Lake — A high-elevation (8,200 ft) reservoir on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, about 35 miles southeast of Lakeside. One of the prettiest fishing lakes in Arizona, with cold, clear water even in midsummer.
